Best Time to Cruise South America
Because South America spans the Southern Hemisphere, its seasons are the reverse of what North American travelers are accustomed to – making it an ideal warm-weather escape during our winter months.
Peak Season (November – March): South America’s summer brings warm temperatures, longer days, and the best conditions for Patagonia and Chilean fjord cruising. Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro enjoy highs near 85°F, while Patagonia remains a cool but navigable 50–60°F. This is also peak season for Antarctica-bound expeditions.
Shoulder Season (October, April): Pleasant weather with fewer crowds and excellent value. A wonderful time for East Coast and West Coast itineraries when temperatures are comfortable and ports are less congested.
Off Season (May – September): South America’s winter brings cooler temperatures to the south, but northern destinations like Brazil, Ecuador, and Colombia remain warm and inviting. Patagonia and Chilean fjord cruises are largely unavailable during this period.
Holiday sailings over New Year’s Eve are especially popular, with festive celebrations in Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires offering unforgettable onboard and onshore revelry.
